In Need of a Light-Hearted Movie? Watch These 10 Feel Good Movies That Will Surely Cheer You Up (Even During a Pandemic)

Now, more than ever perhaps, we are in great need for Feel Good movies. With the world in such uncertain times dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, movies are something that we can easily turn to. It doesn't require much. Just some quiet time, curled up comfortably on the bed or couch with a mug of your favourite drink.

Here are 10 movies, in no particular order, I go to when I need cheering up or to feel invigorated once again! I hope they will also be movies that you will give you a good feeling through any bad phase you might find yourself in.

1. It's A Wonderful Life (1946)

I don't really know what to say about this one. In fact, I don't know how many times I have watched it. So much has already been said about this James Steward and Donna Reed starrer that there is not much I can add to it.

All I can say is that each time, without a fail, I get a warm, tingly feeling in a certain part of my chest and my eyes never remain dry at the end. Don't be put off by the black and white film. Just go watch it. I promise you - You will return to thank me.

If you really need it, there are colorized versions of it but I always go to the black and white version. There is something truly amazing about watching the original.

2. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Perhaps my favourite and most watched Valentines' Day movie! Absolutely love it. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Billy Cyrus is quite unlike anything and not to be missed!

A romantic comedy that is truly funny and a tear jerker. You root for the unlikely pair and when they finally get together, you know your heart has settled just like theirs have.

I absolutely adore the love story of Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby too! They gave lots of hilarious moments in the film!

3. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Yes Okay. I know this is not exactly the kind of fluffy movie that can be called an easy watch. But it is definitely a FEEL GOOD movie!

Sure, it's hard to watch poor Tim Robbin's Andy Dufresne suffer the hardships he did in prison. But we have to persevere and watch it through to the end. I don't wish to spoil it for you but whatever happens in the end, you're sure to feel all re-energised and ready to take on your own personal demons and fight those difficult battles with dignity.

4. Crazy Stupid Love (2011)

Two words... Ryan Gosling.

Okay. And Emma Stone.

Alright alright. Try Steve Carrell.

A roller coaster ride of love - gained and lost. Between a long-time married couple. Of a newly coming together couple. Of a teenage boy's love. The love of a parent for his/her kid and vice versa. There is enough love to go around for any one smart enough to watch this movie!

5. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

Oh what can I say. I absolutely love this musical! Judy Garland was completely swell in this one.

A tale of the Smith family with their four daughters living in 1903 St. Louis before it became a bustling city. A sweet tale of family and love. Weighing the choice of whether to uproot a family from their hometown away from everything dear to them.

And with a healthy sprinkling of catchy songs like "The Trolley Song", "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" and the title song itself - "Meet me in St. Louis".

And that scene towards the end with Margaret O'Brien's character 'Tootie' and Judy Garland always brings tears to my eyes. Absolutely great acting I say. All around a very likeable cast like Leon Ames, Mary Aston and more.

6. The Princess Bride (1987)

A fairytale adventure film. I love fairytales! Had always loved them and here we have a movie about them!

But really it's not just a movie for females, as a character in the movie thought initially. Oh no, not just romance and kisses in this one. Think bigger!

Think pirates and giants, princes and counts.

Sword fighting and kidnapping.

Evil versus good.

All these put together with a great dose of comedy, great acting and a tale that makes you go 'Aww' at the end. Doesn't sound like a movie you should miss.

7. Moonstruck (1987)

Another movie released in the same year. This one is a little contentious. I know a friend who called this boring and hard to get through. But I have always found it a sweet and charming little gem of a movie.

An interesting Italian family living in 1980s New York and the drama of the various characters that unfolds. Starring a young Nicolas Cage looking so dashing.

With the beautiful Cher seeking a safe and boring marriage to settle into but gets totally unsettled when she meets Nicolas Cage's character. Who just happens to be her fiance's brother.

Oh the complications!

Throw in her parents who are having their own set of midlife crisis issues and you get all the makings of a good film.

It might be a little slow for some but it was like eating a slow melting ice cream for me. Extremely satisfying!

8. Jumanji (1995)

Not the Dwayne Johnson's series, though those aren't too bad. Robin Williams is the highlight of this movie! And it also stars a very cute Kirsten Dunst.

One of my absolutely favorite fantasy, family film that all kids should be made to watch. Not because it's particularly educational or anything but it is one hell of a thrill ride that will get them hooked even until adulthood. It's a film I always go back to whenever I need an adventure and some cheering up. Now more than ever, I need Jumanji.

9. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

A cute and weird little film of a regular, quirky family driving across the country so the youngest, a cute Abigail Breslin, could take part in a beauty pageant. Sounds like any regular movie?

Well it is. And like all families, they have their personal issues and challenges, their problems with each other, their fights. The pain and the laughs will remind you of your own familial relationships I am sure.

At the end of the day, you know their problems are not magically solved. But you also know that they will work through it. It's not a happily-ever-after ending by any means. But at least they still have each other.

If you have ever felt like murdering your whole family especially now when you are all cooped up together, watch this. It might help you calm down.

10. The Mummy (1999)

Alright alright. I know it's not well done of me to include this in the list. But it's my absolute guilty pleasure. I go to this movie every time I need cheering up. EVERY time.

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it just feels like cheating if I make a feel-good movie list and not include the movie I have watched (very possibly) the most in my life! I mean what is not to love about it?

The ancient setting, with one of the greatest opening scenes and voice over in movie history (my humble opinion, of course).

A brave, macho leading man... Check.

A dreamy damsel-in-distress, with her comical brother... Check.

A bad guy that needs to be eradicated... Check.

Another macho man to help save the day... Bonus!

Plus a generous sprinkling of a myriad interesting supporting characters... Check, check, check!

If action adventure is your kind of film, then absolutely DON'T MISS this one! Its sequel, The Mummy Returns (2001) is really good too.

A warning though - some might find this a tad bit too scary. You have been warned.

NUS's IS5008, IS5111 and IS5128 Reviews - Master of Computing (Information Systems) Modules

Having just completed my first year of Master of Computing, specialising in Information Systems, I feel like I badly need this upcoming summer break to 'recuperate' before embarking on my next year of study. It hasn't been completely easy to jump into computing from having hardly any background at all (taking the IS specialisation does make it easier though).  Anyway I am halfway into the journey and damn glad for it! For those who are making the jump like me, have faith that you can make it. And maybe I will see you some time in some module.. Before I immerse completely in my break though, I thought I should do a review of all the three modules that I took within this semester. They have all been IS modules but I do hope I will at least find the courage to do a CS module within the next year. **Fingers Crossed**   UPDATE : I did end up doing one CS module - CS5228 so you could also check out that review, link in next paragraph. In this post, I will cover my  Year 1, Semest

NUS's IS5005 and IS5009 Reviews - Master of Computing (Information Systems) Modules

With a new academic year fast approaching within the next few months, I thought I better get my Semester 1 modules review out before taking a well-deserved break from modules and study. Afterall, it feels like quite a feat to have completed my first year in Master of Computing, specialising in Information Systems, which hasn't been easy considering my jump into computing from having hardly any background at all. But enough about me and on to the reviews. In this post, I will cover my Year 1, Semester 1 modules - IS5005 and IS5009 whereas other posts will cover my Year 1, Semester 2 modules - IS5008, IS5111 and IS5128  ,   Year 2, Semester 1 modules - CS5228, IS5116 and IS5151  and Year 2, Semester 2 modules - IS5002 and IS5004 . NUS's CS5228, IS5116 and IS5151 Reviews - Master of Computing Modules

So the first semester of my second year of Master of Computing, specialising in Information Systems, was for lack of a better word, NIGHTMARISH. Somehow I chose modules that were somewhat heavy and on top of that, had to content with a job change right in the middle of the semester! But all things eventually come to an end, even nightmarish semesters. All is well that ends well as they say. In this post, I will cover my  Year 2, Semester 2 modules  - CS5228, IS5116 and IS5151 in the hopes that it will help all of you with your own planning and scheduling for the semester. This semester also marks me undertaking my first CS module (and probably the last one). There are just too many IS modules I am interested in doing and will probably do those. For reviews on the other IS modules I took, do check out those posts here -  Year 1, Semester 1 modules - IS5005 and IS5009  ,  Year 1, Semester 2 modules - IS5008, IS5111 and IS5128  and Year 2, Semester 2 modules - IS5002 and IS5004 .
